Top 10 Touch Screen Kiosk Maintenance Tips – #7 Electronics Inspection

Aug 02 2013

Continuing our series on the Top 10 Touch Screen Kiosk Maintenance Tips, we going to consider inspecting the electronics devices and components within your kiosk or electronic exhibit.

You may think that once you set up your kiosk electronic components and they are running properly, they are set for life.  Well, this is not necessarily the case.  Things can happen within the walls of your touch screen kiosk or electronic exhibit.   Here are a few things to check to keep your electronics in good working order.

Check the connections.  Whether from movement of the kiosk case, or just the temperature changes within the unit, cables can come loose from their connections.  Check all connections.  Any connections that have thumb screws or other securing devices, should be tightened and secure.  Surprisingly, loose cables are the culprit for many kiosk computer issues.

Check the cables.  While you are checking the connections, check the cord of the cables too.  Damage can occur from many different reasons.  If a cable is touching a very hot electronic component, the sleeve can burn or melt.  This can make for a dangerous situation or a malfunction.  If you find a cable damaged by heat, replace the cable and re-route the cable away from the heat source.  Pinching and rubbing can also damage a cable.  These issues should be clearly visible by a worn, torn, or creased sleeve.  These issues can also be dangerous and cause malfunction.  These cables should also be replaced and re-routed to try to avoid the source of the problem.

Check power sources.  Take a close look at any power strips or electric outlets within the kiosk or exhibit.  Keep them clear of dust and dirt and if it’s a unit with power protection, make sure that the protection is in working order.

Check the lights.  Many touch screen kiosks and electronic exhibits utilize lighting.  From spot lights to backlit graphics, the bulbs used do eventually burn out.  Check all lights and light panels to make sure that all bulbs are in working order.  Check also that the color of the light emitted hasn’t changed.  Old bulbs can cast a different colored light which can discolor your images.  Replace any burned out or discolored bulbs to keep your exhibit looking it’s best.
