The real value in most touch screen kiosk initiatives is the information they make so easily available. Whether they contain educational games, wayfinders, or informative programs, touch screen kiosks are efficient and fun vehicles to share your information. But for many exhibit managers who would like to keep their information fresh and up-to-date, the task seems overwhelming. Well, it may not be as difficult as you think.
There are a number of solutions to this problem. Whether you are starting a touch screen kiosk development project from scratch or would like to add something fresh to a kiosk that’s currently in service, these solutions may be just what you need.
If you have a web site that you currently update, adding a link to your web page may work well for you. There are, however, a number of things you should keep in mind. First, the browser. The easiest way to view a web page is by opening a web browser. The problem with using your standard web browser is that the user has access, via the toolbars, to functions that you may not want to allow (i.e. print, save, settings, etc.). If you have a keyboard on your kiosk, allowing access to the address bar can also be problematic. Basically, users have access to the entire internet at their fingertips. One easy solution to this problem is to set the web browser to open in kiosk mode. This will display the page without displaying any of the browser toolbars. This will work for some web pages, but not all. Navigation and scrolling problems can cause your pages to be difficult to view. Another solution is to use a web browser that is designed for kiosk use. These browsers allow you to choose which browser functions you want to display and they are designed with larger (finger sized) buttons for ease of use with a touch screen. Another valuable feature of kiosk web browsers is that they give you the ability to restrict the sites that are viewable in the kiosk. At point2explore, we offer SiteKiosk as a kiosk web browsing solution.
In our next blog entry, I will share more ways to easily update and freshen up your content.
